Head of laboratory of applied climatology of UHMI

Svitlana is a climatologist, PhD in Physics and Mathematics in Geophysics, Head of the Laboratory of Applied Climatology at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute. She develops climate forecasts for Ukraine and is a lead author of reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). She was the first to develop a methodological approach to assess risk and vulnerability to climate change of economic sectors at the oblast level on the basis of ensembles of regional climate models.In 2022, she was named one of the world’s top 10 people who shaped science by Nature. My lifestyle is intense. I feel comfortable in harmony—ideally with nature, but also with people who share my values.

What I value most in people is honesty.

In difficult moments, I tell myself: “This, too, shall pass. I must endure and preserve myself—only then can I support others.”

I love being alone with my thoughts, especially in nature—these are the moments when I truly recharge.

I’m deeply moved by people who, despite all hardships, continue to live and to love others.

I dream of learning to sing, swimming across the Bosphorus, and showing my children the beauty of Antarctica.
